Cornish hedge repairs, Portreath

The client asked Habitat Restoration Co., to close a gap in an existing hedge to prevent footpath users from straying into a sensitive wetland restoration area.

Client brief

The landowner asked us to close a gap in an existing hedge to prevent footpath users from straying into a sensitive wetland restoration area. The solution needed to protect both people and wildlife, while preserving the traditional look and feel of the surrounding landscape.

THRC Solution

We began by cutting back the bank to create a clean, square face – providing a strong foundation for repair. From there, we stone-faced the front using locally sourced granite, with each piece being carefully placed by hand to blend seamlessly with the character of the existing Cornish hedge.

Once the desired height was achieved, we backfilled and compacted the rear of the structure to reinforce stability, ensuring the hedge will stand the test of time.

End Result

The project delivered a traditionally stone-faced Cornish hedge that not only maintains local heritage but also serves an important ecological purpose. Built at a height to deter access from the public footpath, it safeguards newly restored wetland habitats while protecting private land.

This kind of work may be simple in size, but it reflects the craftsmanship, care and environmental awareness that underpins all of our work. From heritage techniques to habitat protection – every detail is connected.
