Client Brief

Not every planting project has to be large-scale woodland creation or habitat restoration.

Sometimes the brief is much simpler: find the right trees, plant them properly, and make sure they have the best chance of establishing.

For this project in Kilkhampton, we were asked to source and plant three Himalayan birch trees for the front garden of a residential property. The client had a clear idea of what they wanted: single-stemmed trees, UK-grown, with the clean white, paper-like bark that makes Himalayan birch such a striking ornamental tree.

They also wanted the biggest trees available within budget, so the sourcing mattered just as much as the planting.

THRC Solution

Sourcing the Right Trees

We used our trusted suppliers to find three Himalayan birch trees that matched the client’s specification.

With ornamental tree planting, the shape and quality of the tree is important. These were not being planted as part of a shelterbelt or woodland block, where individual form matters less. They were going into a front garden, in full view, so the trees needed to be well-grown, balanced and visually strong from day one.

The aim was to create something subtle, but with presence.

Planting and Establishment

Once on site, the trees were positioned and planted carefully into the front lawn.

Each tree was installed with rough-cut, natural-looking timber supports and adjustable tree ties. This gave the trees the support they needed while keeping the finish in keeping with the garden, rather than looking overly formal or heavy.

We also installed perforated irrigation pipe to allow water to be delivered directly to the root ball. That is particularly useful with larger standard trees, where surface watering alone does not always get enough moisture down to where it is needed.

Mycorrhizal inoculant was also added at planting to help support root establishment after translocation.

These are small details, but they make a difference. A tree can look good on the day it is planted, but the real success is whether it settles in and keeps growing properly.

Aftercare

As part of the work, we agreed to inspect the trees at 6, 12 and 18 month intervals.

That follow-up is important, especially with larger ornamental trees. Ties may need adjusting, watering may need reviewing, and early signs of stress are much easier to deal with if they are spotted early.

Tree planting is not just about getting the tree in the ground. It is about giving it the best chance of becoming established.

End Result

The finished planting gave the property three clean, well-grown Himalayan birch trees that immediately improved the front garden.

Their pale bark adds structure and interest without feeling too heavy in the space, and as they mature they should continue to give the garden a simple but striking focal point.

For THRC, this was a small project, but a useful example of our standard tree planting service. We are just as happy sourcing and planting a few carefully chosen garden trees as we are delivering larger woodland and hedgerow schemes.

The same principles still apply: good stock, proper planting, the right support, and aftercare that gives the trees a fair chance.
