Client Brief

As well as delivering planting projects on the ground, THRC supports the Woodland Trust with consultancy work linked to woodland creation and tree planting schemes.

This includes producing tree planting reports for MOREwoods enquiries, visiting landowners to assess potential planting sites, and carrying out post-planting survey reports once schemes have been delivered.

It is an important part of our work because it sits between advice and delivery. A landowner may know they want trees, but that does not always mean they know where to plant, what to plant, what constraints exist, or how the scheme should be approached in practice.

Our role is to help turn an enquiry into something that can be properly assessed, designed and delivered.

THRC Solution

MOREwoods Site Visits and Reports

For MOREwoods enquiries, we visit potential planting sites and assess the land in practical terms.

That means looking at the proposed planting area, existing habitats, access, soil and ground conditions, exposure, grazing pressure, deer or rabbit pressure, existing trees and hedgerows, watercourses, services, landscape context and the landowner’s long-term aims.

We then produce a report that helps inform whether the site is suitable for planting and what kind of scheme may be appropriate.

The value of this work is in the detail. A planting scheme needs to suit the land, not just fill an area on a map. A wet field corner, exposed slope, old hedgerow line, pasture edge or valley bottom may all need different species, protection and aftercare.

Because we also plant and maintain trees ourselves, our advice is grounded in what actually works on site.

Bridging the Gap Between Landowner Ambition and Practical Delivery

Many landowners come to tree planting with good intentions, but the practical questions often come later.

Where should the trees go? What species suit the ground? Will deer pressure be a problem? Can machinery still access the field? Is there a watercourse or service constraint? What aftercare will be needed? How will the planting look in 5, 10 or 30 years?

Our consultancy work helps answer those questions early.

That reduces the risk of planting in the wrong place, choosing the wrong species, or creating a scheme that is difficult to maintain. It also helps landowners understand what they are committing to before work begins.

Post-Planting Survey Reports

We also carry out post-planting surveys to assess how schemes are establishing.

These visits look at survival rates, guard condition, weed competition, browsing damage, planting quality, failures, access issues and any early signs that the scheme may need intervention.

Post-planting surveys are important because planting is only the start. A new woodland or shelterbelt can look finished on day one, but the real test is how it performs over the first few years.

A good survey helps identify issues early, before they become expensive failures.

Why THRC Is Well Placed for This Work

THRC brings a contractor’s eye to woodland consultancy.

We understand planting design, but we also understand the practical reality of getting trees established in difficult ground, bad weather, awkward access, high deer pressure, heavy vegetation and working farm environments.

That means our reports are not just theoretical. They are written with delivery and aftercare in mind.

For the Woodland Trust, this gives practical support for landowners considering tree planting. For landowners, it gives clearer advice, better expectations and a more realistic route from enquiry to establishment.

For THRC, this is exactly the kind of consultancy work we want to grow: advice that is useful because it is grounded in real land management experience.
